oh one thing: path needs renaming to nodepath.  otherwise it gets utterly
confused with "import path".

likewise all python keywords need avoiding ("type=..." and "id=...."
especially)

i like short as well but short-and-conflicting is extremely bad for all
sorts of reasons.
