it's over 80 characters.

you _are_ doing "git diff" prior to "git commit" each and every time without
fail, and you _are_ doing that in an 80 wide xterm therefore you should have
noticed that the diff wrapped even though you _are_ keeping the editor window
width to an 80 char hard limit and just happened just this once not to
notice...
