ah! it's funny, i've been doing sysadmin stuff for so long, that i forget
things: "it works this way" and can't entirely explain it clearly.  i had
forgotten that i'd learned "export DISPLAY=:0.0" from inside a chroot then
"xhosts +" from outside a chroot (or in this case, adding those to
~/.bash_profile) and graphical programs fire up with no trouble onto outside.
