fantastic.  the code's really clear so can be used to do a side-by-side review

sigh.  it may be a good idea to raise a bugreport about the overflow
case.  the qemu team might want to have strict compliance even with
undefined cases as these tend to catch people out when it comes to
unusual interoperability uses.
