yesterday spent adding more and more debug messages
into microwatt linux-5.7 until finally on the timer_interrupt()
function i was able to ascertain that timer_interrupt() is going
into an infinite loop.

turns out there's a 50% chance - a deterministic one depending
on the program being executed - that the reset of DEC will be
ignored for one instruction.

currently testing a fix for that (overwriting the cached copy of
DEC)
