Lauri: re-running update-grub it overwrote the changes you made.
i edited /etc/default/grub to add the option disable_radix to it
and also added "init=/sbin/init"

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet disable_radix init=/sbin/init"

reboot done, systemd purged.  safe to log back in.
