wooow, this is turning out to be truly awful :)

it's effectively a massive intrusive hack which multiplexes 2
completely different PowerDecoders at the "top" level, based on
information *from one of those decoders*.

argh.

hacking the massive unruly python amorphous amoeba called
power_decoder.py would have been better than this :)

but i needed time to think about what to do, there, and i have a
strategy which i'll implement later.

in the meantime i am almost done polluting PowerDecoder2 with terrible hacks.
