clearly that was intended to be 64bit.  frickin phones.

done.  it was relatively straightforward, involving running the unit tests
(which failed) and repeatedly playing the "hmm where's the number 32
buried somewhere in 10s of 1000s of lines of code that needs to be
changed to 64" game.

turns out there weren't that many.
