working with tim i have got icarus verilog simulations of
quad-spi up and running which has allowed (finally after
a frustrating week) access to the information needed,
and am currently testing the spi controller in Quad mode
(default was single).

simulations showed that in single-bit spi mode the data
returned was always FFFFFFFFFFF, which matches with
the hardware.
