yep.  there was a quite a stir when someone managed to connect to the
JTAG port of an HDD, found it ran standard ARM linux, replaced the
firmware so that whenever it saw a filename "/etc/shadow" served up a
completely different version

interesting!  well, encryption would not necessarily be needed, but a
digital signature (as long as it's damn fast) would do the job.
