similar but see the comments and detailed explanation provided at the
Compressed bugreport (discussion to take place there, this is the
statistical analysis bugreport)

discussion of Compressed encodings under the Compressed bugreport, please,
this one is for statistical analysis methods.  once we've got some tools
and techniques i'll close it whilst the Compressed one will remain open.
