the diagram represents exactly what I propose, thanks.

the only catch is that I'm not sure about the byte order in BE and LE encodings
(I read somewhere that it's not quite as obvious as the terms suggest), so
instead of bytes 0 through 3, I'd have labeled them MmlL, M standing for most
significant, L for least significant.
